The Head of Data and Analytics (Audience) will lead the Audience and Data Team with overall responsibility for gaining a deep understanding of our audience and delivering those insights to our Commercial, Subscription, Events, Marketing and Editorial teams so they can develop our brands, products and platforms to continually adapt to our audience needs and lead to a data-led decision-making culture.

The Head of Data and Analytics (Audience) will recruit and lead a dynamic, commercially-focused team to devise and deliver a data strategy covering data analytics, business intelligence, data management and data visualisation services.

Key Accountabilities: 

Audience data strategy

Lead, develop and deliver our audience data strategy in conjunction with key stakeholders from across all areas of the business


Recruit, lead and develop a driven, highly-skilled team including a Data Analyst and DBA
Ensure continuity of service at all times through shared knowledge and skill-sets across members of the team

Data Analysis

Develop a deep understanding of audience behaviour across all brands within the group, including user activity covering subscriptions (corporate and individual) and marketing
Work with commercial teams to determine what factors influence audience behaviour and how this can be shaped to improve engagement and drive new revenues
Provide a proactive service helping to identify trends and anomalies in data sets (such as falling subscription numbers) 
Identify new opportunities through data-driven insights
Monitor and analyse competitor activity and provide insights back to the business

Data and information management

Lead the development of reference data, master data and data models, and promote and drive the implementation across the business
Act as Business Owner for the existing Audience Management system, reviewing data quality and processes to maintain and improve the integrity of this data
Support marketing teams across the full data lifecycle include providing input and recommendations for data acquisition and validation


Develop processes and procedures to improve data management across the group (including change management, data quality, accuracy and security)
Ensure GDPR policies relating to the management of personal data are implemented (including acquisition, storage, archival and deletion) and GDPR-related requests (including SAR’s and right to be forgotten) are actioned within agreed timeframes

Reporting and Visualisation

Develop appropriate forms for presentation of data, including utilisation of reports and dashboards, ensuring consistency of information
Manage access to reports maintaining appropriate security and permissions

Data Management

Ensure the technical infrastructure is fit for purpose, and processes are well managed and monitored (e.g. backup and restore routines)
Ensure DBA maintenance activities (such as sizing, indexing etc) are undertaken in a proactive and timely fashion to ensure no impact on the business
Carry out any data cleansing / matching exercises required across the group


Promote best practice in audience measurement and engagement 
Develop policies and processes to manage requests coming into the team, ensuring appropriate prioritisation so that all activities are handled within agreed timeframes and the response to the business is timely and efficient
Ensure the quality of the work completed by the team is of the highest standard and that key stakeholders are satisfied
Represent the data team on any new project or initiative
Oversee the rollout of the Audience Management system across all parts of the EMAP business
Take the lead on all data aspects for new acquisitions including performing due diligence where required
Provide regular KPI reports to Senior Management covering data team activities

Key Results Areas:

Publication and ownership of the data strategy and roadmap
Business users have access to the insights and analysis they require, when they require it and with a high degree of confidence as to the accuracy of the data
Clear understanding of audience activities and engagement across all brands
Day to day data team activities are completed satisfactorily
Processes have been developed in conjunction with the business
Measurable improvement in data quality across all data sets within the business
GDPR policies are in place and being actioned as appropriate
Reports are delivered on time to Senior Management


Demonstrable experience of helping an organisation understand, grow and improve their audience data
Prior experience leading, motivating and developing teams carrying out similar functions to those described above in a fast-paced commercial organisation
Prior experience from within a media / events / publishing company would be advantageous

IT, Administrative and Organisational Skills:

Good in-depth knowledge of data analytics, website analytics, measurement and methodologies
Significant experience of business intelligence, data architecture and design
Good understanding of database technologies
Good broad experience of reporting, analytical and visualisation tools (including Tableau and Adobe Analytics)
Very comfortable with MS Office tools
Strong numerical and analytics skills with very high attention to detail
Excellent planning and organisational skills, with the ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines, and to demonstrate an effective and resourceful approach to addressing issues


Resourceful and purposeful, with initiative, drive and a strong desire to deliver exceptional results
A team player both internally and externally

Communication skills:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present and explain technical issues to those without a technical background

Good presentation skills including being comfortable presenting to senior management
