Key Accountabilities: 

Directing news coverage

  • Sets news strategy through wide knowledge of industry and key contacts
  • Regularly break exclusive news stories
  • Lead the team of reporters to source and write agenda-setting, exclusive industry news
  • Ensure important breaking news stories are followed up quickly with an analysis of what it means for the Drapers audience
  • Edit news stories, making sure they are well researched and written, and legally sound
  • Work closely with the Head of Content Production to optimise headlines for effectiveness, and ensure all copy is published according to house style and the highest editorial standards
  • Meet tight print deadlines for news
  • Ensure the news section covers a breadth of sectors and determine which subjects should be covered, in what depth
  • Lead, plan and manage in-depth investigations
  • Plan, commission and write in-depth reactive news analysis

Effective line management

  • Allocate beats to news team members and oversee their coverage
  • Line manage the news reporters, identifying development areas and carrying out appraisals

Improving engagement

  • Make sure news is shared on all social media channels
  • Work with Head of Digital Engagement to develop newsletter strategy
  • Manage the newsletter schedule and Drapers Daily News output
  • Use analytics to monitor and react to most popular stories
  • Feed stories to the national media, to raise the brand’s profile and reputation
  • Work with the art team to continually improve the look of news in the magazine and online
  • Come up with interesting and innovative ways to present news content online, eg through data visualisations
  • Ensure the news section of the Drapers website is kept up-to-date

Liaising with other departments

  • Ensure the news team is contributing creative ideas to the wider Drapers brand, including writing features and comment pieces
  • Contribute, when required, to the success of events and awards, including suggesting speakers and judges and chairing debates where appropriate

Drapers brand ambassador

  • Attend regular meetings and events, acting as an ambassador for Drapers
