Retail Jeweller is the industry leading B2B title for the jewellery and watch sectors, providing online content, daily news alerts, social media channels, a monthly print magazine and events for retailers, suppliers, brands, designers and manufacturers. Established in 1925, Retail Jeweller is 97 years old and remains, to this day, the trusted go-to industry title for those working in the sector.

The deputy editor will help to manage the day-to-day running of Retail Jeweller and assist the editor with Retail Jeweller’s brand growth strategy.

This includes ensuring engaging, accurate and grammatically correct copy is produced in a timely manner, across print, digital, newsletters and social media. A core part of the role will be responsibility for the brand’s digital and social media channels, including writing and editing online content, sending out daily newsletters and updating social media. The deputy editor will also have responsibility for managing and writing several regular features within the monthly magazine as well as editing and signing off pages in conjunction with the editor.

Retail Jeweller offers a growing portfolio of events, including the UK Jewellery Festival and UK Jewellery Awards, and the deputy editor will be required to support the editor and account director with the development of these. As a senior member of the team, the deputy editor will also be expected to act as a brand ambassador at external events within the sector.

  • Managing the daily content output online of, daily newsletters and social media, ensuring content is optimised
  • Using the Content Management System (CMS) to an advance level and be capable of editing and making changes to the website
  • Contributing to and writing regular and special features for the monthly magazine
  • Proofing and approving some print pages
  • Working with Retail Jeweller’s production editor and art director to ensure that content across all channels is in line with house style
  • Deputising for the editor, when required, on any final editorial and commercial/ad-related decisions
  • Keeping an eye out for new ways to improve our content
  • Supporting with new content ideas, digital initiatives and development of events.
  • Attending events, press days, conferences, setting up meetings with senior people in the industry, and building a profile within the industry (subject to Covid restrictions).
  • Devising new ideas and products that could have commercial opportunities, including ad-get features/special issues, events, and sponsorship opportunities.
  • Working closely with Retail Jeweller’s account director on commercial opportunities and regularly passing on leads to the commercial team. Attending relevant commercial meetings and events.

Skills and experience:

  • NCTJ qualification, or equivalent journalism training or experience
  • Ability to write, edit and proof copy to a high standard
  • Knowledge and experience using a CMS
  • Knowledge of SEO and analytics
  • Social media experience
  • Digital skills such as video and audio recording and editing are a bonus.
