Metropolis International

Metropolis International is founded, initially specialising in guidebooks and tourist maps.

2000s

2002 – 2010

Metropolis acquisitions

Metropolis makes major acquisitions of:
National Plant Hire Guide, Record Collector, Frontier, IEM, DFNI, Mortgage Finance Gazette, What Mortgage, Motor Trader, Independent Retail News, Irish Medical Times, MIMS Ireland, Packaging News and AV Magazine.

More acquisitions for Metropolis

Metropolis sets out to grow its digital, events and paid content business, while making more acquisitions of some amazing brands:
Electronics Weekly, IBIS Academic, Property Week and Daltons Business.

The revenues of Metropolis reach £30 Million.

2018

More Event Launches

The Nursing Times launches its Workforce Summit and Awards.

PPA Awards

Metropolis brands win PPA Team of the Year, PPA Event of the Year, PPA Special Interest Magazine of the Year, and PPA Commercial Partnership of the Year – Silver Award.

2019

Event Expansion

First podcast launched – “The Engineers Collective”. Several events are launched: NCE Future of Bridges Conference, NCE Future of Floods Conference, Property Week Industrial & Logistics Conference and Drapers Sustainable Fashion Conference. Annual “big cat” staff innovation challenge launched.

2020

Adaptation

We launched: Construction News Decarbonising Construction Conference, LGC Net Zero Conference, Record Collector bookazines. Fifty virtual awards and conferences launched so that they could be held in the pandemic.

2021

More Launches

We launched the UK Jewellery Festival and Decarbonisation Technology.

Diamond Publishing Growth

emap Publishing’s sister company, Diamond Publishing (responsible for consumer titles), acquires Cyclist, Viz and Fortean Times.

2022

Cycling Electric

We launched a new brand, Cycling Electric, after looking at current consumer trends.

2024

Modern Day Vision

emap’s B2B media brand count stands at more than 44, and it employs almost 500 staff across offices in Fleet Street, Croydon, Dublin, Bolton and Chester. Its vision of creating long-term profitable futures for its brands is stronger than ever.

1887

The start

Founder Sir Richard Winfrey purchases the Spalding Guardian, a local newspaper. This purchase sparks a series of newspaper acquisitions at the end of the 19th century.

1947

East Midlands Allied Press

The Winfrey family newspaper titles are led in a consolidation as Northampton Printing and Publishing Co merges with Petersborough Advertiser Co, West Norfolk and King’s Lynn Newspaper Co and Bury St. Edmunds with printing operations around Rushden to form the East Midlands Allied Press (emap). The new alliance produced 17 newspaper titles.

2002

Record Sales

Revenues for the Metropolis reach £1 Million.

2005

More Record Sales

Metropolis continues to grow as revenues reach £5 Million.

2006

Rapid growth

The rapid growth of Metropolis continues as revenues now reach £10 Million.

2011

Robert joins as CEO

Robert Marr joins Metropolis Group as Chief Executive Officer to lead the expansion of the company and the company’s revenue reaches £20 Million.

2013

IQFAs

The Irish Quality Food Awards launched.

2017

Metropolis acquires emap

emap Publishing and its remaining 11 B2B titles including AJ, Nursing Times, Construction News, World Architecture Festival and Drapers are acquired, and Metropolis adopts the emap name for all its B2B operations, now standing at x36 titles.

2018

Record Sales

Sales break £50 Million for the first time in the company’s history due to the success of the brands and acquisitions made.

2019

Acquisitions for Metropolis

Metropolis furthers its acquisition efforts by adding a further seven titles to its portfolio:
Digital Refining, PTQ, Money Marketing, Mortgage Strategy, Platforum, Headline Money and Taxbriefs.

50:50 Project

emap joins the BBC 50:50 project to give a fair voice to women in media, as the biggest publishing member, supporting editorial teams in making further progress to fairly represent the industries they serve.

2020

Record Shortlists

Metropolis brands shortlisted as finalists 12 times, a record for the group, and Property Week wins PPA business magazine brand of the year.

Huge Events Innovation

Coming off the back of the pandemic, our brands find amazing growth in the events sector. We launched: AJ Retrofit Live, Drapers Sustainable Fashion Awards, Property Week Inspiring Women Awards, Inspiring Women in Construction and Engineering Conference, Motor Trader Retailing Expo, NCE Awards, GE Sustainability and the Environmental Packaging Awards.
