Do you have Features Editor experience and are now looking to help educate and inform some of the most crucial and important sectors within the UK?

We are looking for someone with an entrepreneurial and can-do attitude, always looking for ways to stand out from the crowd, who is not afraid to try new things, and be part of a team who is passionate about our award-winning brands.

EMAP is a fast-growing #content, #subscription and #events business. We exist to provide customers with world class content and connections, empowering their businesses to be the best informed, best connected, and most productive. Our products enable focus, growth and value through our industry-leading portfolio of brands including Drapers, Property Week, The Architects’ Journal, Nursing Times, and Construction News.

About the role:

Construction News is the leading provider of news, insight, and events for the UK construction industry. CN’s Features Editor plays a key role in meeting this brief. You will take the lead on all CN’s long-form content, making a major contribution to the quality of CN’s subscriber offering. You will work on material for online as well as print publication, with a digital-first approach that also caters for a monthly print magazine focused on strategic issues.

CN’s long-form content includes features, interviews, investigations, project reports, case studies and audience surveys. You will regularly produce such material yourself and assist the Editor and Deputy Editor in scheduling long-form content tasks across the CN team. You will also commission freelance writers to support the full-time team, when necessary. You will be expected to be a full and active member of the CN editorial team, writing shorter articles on a regular basis as part of the site’s news offering.

Another important task is to take charge of CN’s opinion output, which involves reviewing a steady stream of op-ed pitches from the industry and guiding good suggestions through to publication. You will also proactively commission unpaid op-eds on key topics. Across all your work, you will be expected to maintain CN’s reputation for high-quality, insightful journalism, including investigations on hard-hitting topics that have a real-world impact.

At heart, this role offers a fantastic opportunity for an ambitious journalist to create brilliant content and help inspire a wider editorial team. You will demand and set a high standard of quality journalism, serving the interests of an engaged audience of subscribers.

Construction is a nationally important industry. You will be able to work on articles that will be noticed by industry leaders, politicians, the public, and mainstream media.

Key responsibilities:

  • Ensuring delivery of the pipeline of feature material, determining new topics worth investigating, and monitoring the output of rival media outlets.
  • Researching and writing your own long-form and opinion pieces, plus regularly contributing news stories or leads for others to follow up.
  • Sourcing visual material for use with long-form stories.
  • Supporting the Editor and Deputy Editor in delivering editorial output that is legal, of high quality, and meets the needs of CN’s audience across print, digital and social media.
  • Collaborating with the Production Editor to ensure material is speedily readied for publication, and that CN stories achieve their full potential using analytics and social media.
  • Contributing to CN’s live events and webinars.

Skills and experience:

  • Experienced journalist, ready to manage freelance writers alongside completing your own work.
  • Relevant experience writing features and news material.
  • Skilled at building and maintaining the contacts needed to deliver insightful articles.
  • Copy-editing skills to ensure long-form output is well structured, readable, and informative.
  • Familiar with journalism law and how to write effectively about a litigious industry.
  • Ready to offer guidance to other writers on angles and information gathering.
  • Experience working with both digital and print formats is preferable, as is familiarity with using analytics to help raise the performance of editorial output.
  • The ability to tackle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ideally with an interest in the technical, financial, and political aspects of the construction industry.
