Trading as emap for its B2B division, Metropolis International is a fast-growing business, privately owned Media Group with over £50m of annual revenue, structured in two divisions – consumer media, and business-to-business media. In both parts of the business, we run print magazines, digital content and both face-to-face and virtual awards, conferences, and other events. Metropolis is actively looking at acquiring more media businesses. We employ over 480 people in offices in West London, Croydon, Fleet street, Devon and Dublin.

Drapers aims to help those working in fashion retail make better business decisions through exclusive news, analysis, commentary, and in-depth research. Now in its 135th year, it is the UK’s market leading #B2B publication for the #fashion industry, with unparalleled authority in the sector.

As news editor you will have excellent relationships with key contacts that you use to regularly break exclusive news stories. You will have experience of setting the news agenda, leading a team of reporters to source and write agenda-setting, exclusive industry news, and following it up with in-depth analysis.

Drapers offers a growing portfolio of virtual and face-to-face conferences, awards, and smaller bespoke networking events, and you will be required to help develop these and, at times, to chair them. As a senior member of the team, you will also be expected to act as a brand ambassador at external events.

Key responsibilities:

  • Set news strategy through wide knowledge of industry and key contacts
  • Regularly break agenda-setting, exclusive industry news
  • Line manage a team of reporters, identifying development areas and carrying out appraisals
  • Ensure important breaking news stories are followed up quickly with an analysis of what it means for the Drapers audience
  • Forward plan the news and news analysis pages for the monthly print issue of Drapers, helping with picture research, setting deadlines and allocating writers.
  • Edit and write news stories, making sure they are well researched and well written, and legally sound
  • Work closely with Head of Content Production to optimise headlines for effectiveness, and ensure all copy is published according to house style and the highest editorial standards
  • Lead, plan and manage in-depth investigations
  • Ensure news is shared on all social media channels and work with digital editor to drive traffic to Drapers website.
  • Keep the news section of the Drapers website up-to-date and create interesting and innovative ways to present news content online
  • Ensure the news team is contributing creative ideas to the wider Drapers brand, including writing features and comment pieces
  • When required, work with the conference and events team to put together agenda-setting programmes, suggesting speakers for events, chairing sessions at conferences, awards, webinars etc.
  • When required, attend and report from national and international industry trade shows.

Skills and experience:

  • NCTJ qualification, or equivalent journalism training or experience.
  • Effective people management
  • Experience of breaking exclusive news and ability to commission and edit copy to a high standard

This exciting position is a full-time hybrid role. 2 days in the office, 3 days from home. This could change over time depending on business needs.
